Dear Parents,
Starting tonight your child will bring home a weekly list of "Popcorn" words in their popcorn notebook. These are the words which your child should be able to read fluently and automatically by the end of First Grade. Many of the words are 'sight' words, meaning those which cannot be sounded out. Others are high frequency words, which your child will encounter on a regular basis.
One of the ways in which children become fluent readers is by building a 'sight' vocabulary of basic words that appear often in print. These frequently used sight words are words which need to be recognized immediately upon seeing them.
In addition to the work we do in school with these words, please help your child to review them as often as possible at home. Some of the daily homework tasks may require your child to use the popcorn words for that week.
The initial goal is for your child to be able to read the popcorn words and ultimately to be able to spell them correctly.
We appreciate your help and support,
Morah Vicky and Morah Eileen.
